Best Tips for Your Home Guides

How To Find a Source for Home Heating Oil

October 28, 2020 by Tania

If you’ve never lived in a home with an oil burning furnace before, it’s a different experience from having a common electric or natural gas furnace. Like homeowners with wood burning stoves and propane furnaces, you need to locate a source for the fuel that will keep you warm in the winter. You also need to decide how much to buy at once, which can be a tough call to make if cash is tight. Often, the prices for a refill in the middle of winter are a lot higher than the seasonal lows you see during summertime, so purchasing enough oil to last all season can save you a lot.

What’s Your Out the Door Price?

On top of the cost of the oil itself, you need to understand how much it’s going to cost to get it to you. It’s not like you can just go pick up a couple jugs at the store if you’re buying for a full sized home furnace. That means there will be delivery costs. Whether they are included in the initial quote or not varies, so if you’re going to comparison shop, you need to know if there are any extra costs like that, to make sure you find the best deals on home heating oil Sullivan County NY.

How Much To Buy?

There are two things to keep in mind when deciding how much oil to buy. One is the amount you used last year, the other is the threshold for volume discounts. If you have the tank capacity to buy a little more than you used last year but it saves you on each gallon, you might actually pay less out the door than buying exactly that amount. If it’s your first winter and you didn’t get an estimate on the annual oil consumption from the last owner, it’s worth asking the professionals who work for your local home heating oil company for a recommendation. They can tell you what the average home they service needs to make it without a midwinter delivery, which provides you with a good starting point for figuring out your first seasonal order.… Read More...

How to Keep Concrete Structures from Cracking in the Winter

September 29, 2020 by Tania

Like it or not, old man winter will soon be here and he’ll bring with him all of his cold weather might.  Winter is easily the harshest time of the year as it brings cloudy, damp days, below freezing temperatures, snow, wind and frost.  Materials that are left exposed to the elements suffer most since the fluctuations in temperatures cause them to expand and contract from day to day.  This often has a very negative effect on brickwork and concrete.

Since these two materials are porous, the frigid temperatures often cause moisture in brick and concrete to freeze and expand.   As the temperatures increase above freezing, the moisture heats up and eventually evaporates.  The issue, however, has already begun as cracking within the concrete has already started.  The next time moisture enters the brick or concrete, it will cause an even larger crack until eventually it ends up structurally useless and crumbles to pieces.  At that point, your only option will be to call a concrete contractor or mason to replace the material.

As is true in most cases, maintaining something in good working order is less costly than waiting until it’s too late and having to make large repairs or replacing it.  Below are a few tips to keep your concrete in good shape and prevent spalling.

Patch or Repair

This one might seem a bit obvious, but most people are intimidated by concrete work so it never gets done.  Before you know it, it’s too late.  The best way to keep concrete from cracking too deep is to catch it when you first see it.  Your big box store has simple products such as Quikrete’s Polyurethane Concrete Crack Sealant that is extremely easy and quick to apply.  This flexible sealant adheres extremely well to concrete and will expand and contract with your concrete to always maintain that seamless look.

For slabs of concrete that are showing cracks larger than a quarter inch, its best that you call a professional concrete repair company to inspect what you have going on.  Allow them to advise you of next steps, and if you’re feeling adventurous, take on a new concrete challenge.

A Spalling Solution

Once you’ve addressed all the small cracks and pits that need to be addressed, take the next layer of prevention by applying a surface spalling compound to the affected area.  This gets applied on a much larger area, but before you do anything, you’ll need to make sure that the flooring is completely clean of dirt, grime and other debris.

The easiest way to do this is with a power washer.  The spalling solution binds and adheres directly onto the concrete and creates a seamless looking layer that flexibly expands and contracts with the concrete itself.  This product is excellent to use on sidewalks, stairs, driveways, patios and any other concrete surfaces around the house.

Sealer

By now you’ve applied a couple of extra layers of protection to your concrete, but there is one more critical layer … Read More...

Help at the Last Minute

September 10, 2020 by Sean

A friend of mine helped me out with a big problem last week. I forgot all about a paper that I had to turn in for my class. My friend finished her paper early and told me that I could use her paper to make mine. I told her that there was no way I would have enough time to rewrite her paper, and she told me that I could just use the Parafrasare website to rewrite the words and everything would be fine. I was hoping that she was right, because this paper was worth a large chunk of our grade in the class and I was going to be in trouble if I didn’t hand in something.

I had no idea that such a website existed, and now I’m wondering if my friend has ever used it before to write her own papers. It would explain how she is able to finish her papers so early. She could have easily either gotten information online and put it through the website, or even found whole papers that already exist and send them through the website. Either way, the paper she gave me was a pretty good paper, so if she had been sending it through the website, the website did a pretty good job. I ran the paper through the website and it created one with all of the sentences rewritten to look entirely different.

Thanks to my friend, I had a paper ready to turn into my professor without having to stay up all night to do it. I was a little worried that the professor would find out what I did, but he gave me a high grade on the paper, and my friend got a high grade as well. To celebrate, we ate dinner at Brazilian steakhouse and I paid for her meal as a thank you gift.… Read More...

How To Tell If Your Tree Has Root Rot

August 13, 2020 by Tania

The trees in your garden or house can suddenly appear unhealthy, without any physical sign of damage or disease infection. If you have carefully evaluated your plant and you can’t seem to identify any cause of the sudden change in appearance, the problem may be underground.

What is Root Rot?

Root rot is the decay of the root system of any plant. Root rot can, therefore, affect both indoor and outdoor plants and trees. When discovered early, the disease will not have adverse effects on your tree. However, because the disease is mostly underground, discovering it early may be problematic.

What is the Cause of Root Rot?

Root rot is caused by two main factors, poor soil drainage, which causes dampness in soil and fungal infections. Roots in a dump soil become extremely saturated, hence can no longer uptake oxygen from the soil. Poor drainage may result from highly compacted soil, which doesn’t permit water to seep through, away from your tree’s root system.

Fungi is naturally present in the soil in the form of fungal spores. When soil is dry, it keeps these spores dormant. However, in soil with enough nutrients and water, the previously dormant fungal spores begin to reproduce. The plant roots also provide extra nutrients for the spores to multiply.

Some of the fungi responsible for root rot include Phytophthora, Pythium, Armillaria and Rhizoctonia.

Symptoms of Root Rot

Trees with root rot are unable to absorb water, minerals and oxygen from the soil adequately. Thus, they will wilt and eventually die, especially during the drought season.

Other symptoms include:

  • Stunted growth
  • Brown and shrinking leaves
  • Smaller sized leaves
  • Decaying branches
  • Smaller canopy
  • Dark lines or bands on the trunk and branches
  • Darker sap

The fungal infections will initially develop at the extremities before spreading to other root parts. If the condition is ideal for reproduction of the fungal spores, the infection can spread and kill the tree within ten days.

Diagnosing Root Rot

Looking for root rot may prove daunting, especially if you are unaware of what to look out for. When you suspect that your trees are infested with root rot, the first step is to contact professional help for a more accurate diagnosis. A tree disease professional must dig out the soil around the root system, locating sections of the root that have been affected.

Can Your Tree Survive Root Rot?

Yes! A cure for root rot is possible, mostly if the infection is at its initial stages, and the decay is still minimal. On the other hand, curing root in large trees is impossible, because it will require uprooting a tree whose roots have undergone years of development and expansion. In this sense, it is easier to cure smaller trees compared to older and larger trees.

Treating Root Rot

Carefully dig around the smaller tree roots, removing as much soil from the intact root as possible. Pull out the tree from the soil and rinse off the root system with slow running water. … Read More...
